A Show Like No Other
“This isn’t how it’s supposed to go,” the Entity thought to itself.
“They should be screaming. But they aren’t screaming. Why aren’t they screaming? Something is very wrong here…”
Initially, the show was a smashing success. Billed as an ‘unholy cabaret,’ it put Théâtre Mourguet on the map and drew crowds of thrill-seekers to an unfashionable side street on Montmartre’s fringes. There was truly nothing like it anywhere in Paris’s entertainment world. For a time, it caused quite a stir.
The Cast of Eldritch Fiends
Most of the cast were seasoned professionals—skilled performers who could dance, sing, strut, and declaim with the best. A few layers of greasepaint, putty, prosthetics, and pig’s blood transformed them into ‘eldritch fiends,’ impressing audiences with their gruesome looks and depraved appetites. Not that it took much effort for many of them to appear like depraved fiends—they were actors, after all.
The Star Attraction
The real draw was the star performer, known only as “The Entity.” Praised for his odd physique, grotesque voice, and unnerving habit of vanishing and reappearing in perfect silence, he mesmerized the audience. Crowds bundled up through the winter to marvel, applaud, and cheer without reservation.
The Waning Novelty
But as spring arrived, the novelty—the bewildering impossibility of the Entity—became almost… commonplace.
